ALEX BERNSTEIN

Biography

ALEX BERNSTEIN

Born in 1973 in Asheville (North Carolina), Alex Gabriel Bernstein grew up in a creative environment, surrounded by the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. His father was one of the founding members of the Glass Art Society (GAS), and his mother is also an established glass artist. Alex Bernstein studied psychology at the University of North Carolina before working in a children’s psychiatric hospital. Driven by a passion to create, he decided to pursue a Master of Fine Arts at the prestigious Rochester Institute of Technology. In 2007, he returned to his hometown, where he set up his own studio and devoted himself full-time to creation.

Alex Bernstein explores visual form with a refreshing boldness. His sculptures in moulded, cut and polished glass invite the viewer to plunge into intimate narrative landscapes. Through his work, he explores the passage of time and nature’s transformative processes, such as oxidation, erosion, growth and decomposition.

Alex Bernstein is technically a glass moulder. His process of subtractive sculpture involves removing material, while playing with textures, reliefs and colour gradations. His three-dimensional works reveal all their splendour under the effect of light, creating an illusion of movement. A few years ago, Alex Bernstein discovered a method of applying metal to glass, which he now uses as a serrated, protective layer for his creations.
