CODERCH & MALAVIA
Biography
Joan Coderch was born in Castellar del Vallés (Spain) in 1959. He graduated from Barcelona’s Faculty of Fine Arts in 1984. Javier Malavia, born in 1970 in Oñati (Spain), graduated from the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia in 1993. The sculptors met while working for the same porcelain manufacturer. After discovering their shared artistic goals, they decided to set up their own studio in 2015. By combining two artistic sensibilities, the duo amplify their results, each feeding off the creativity of the other.
Inspired by Auguste Rodin, Marino Marini and Antoine Bourdelle, they blend traditional techniques and modern inspirations in remarkable creations imbued with lightness. In their work, the representation of the human body becomes poetry.
In their hands, the material acquires expressiveness and strength. Following the three Platonic principles of “Truth, Goodness and Beauty”, their works are cast in bronze and delicately welded with a desire for durability. Their sculptures, both realistic and spectacular, capture the transience and rhythm of dance movements.
